PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Christine Jones is one of several prominent Republicans in the race for Governor. Among the other candidates, Secretary of State Ken Bennett, State Treasurer Doug Ducey, and Mesa Mayor Scott Smith are calling for a secure border.

Jones came forward today with a somewhat more specific plan.

In her bid to take the hardest line on immigration, Christine Jones, a former GoDaddy executive, was joined by Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu, who endorsed her plan, but not her.

Jones said one job is the fence off Arizona from Mexico.

"We've got to finish the fence, we do not need the great wall of Mexico here, what we do need is fencing along highly trafficked and known smuggling routes. Law enforcement can respond in real time making consequences the ultimate deterrent," said Christine Jones.

Jones revealed that not all of the border will be fenced, only parts that are known supply routes for smugglers. Jones also called for 1,200 National Guard troops to be deployed on the border. It would cost the state $270 million dollars.

Fred Duval, a Democrat running against Jones, said she doesn't think her plan would work.

"It is not sufficient for the task, the border zone runs across multiple states. We don't need a solution that pushes the problem someplace else, these kids in Nogales came across the Texas border," said Duval.

Mesa Mayor Scott Smith said that Jones's plan is unwise. "It's a nice rhetoric, but who is going to pay for it, this is a two thousand mile problem, not a two hundred mile problem," he said.

Regarding who will pay for it, Christine Jones promises to stick the feds with the tab.

Critics of her say good luck with that. Sticking the feds with the tab has been tried by Governors in the past, and it hasn't worked. Christine Jones said the feds may try to ignore her, but they will hear her loud and clear.
