Crackdown on Times Square cartoon characters

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - There is a new push to crack down on the people who dress up as cartoon characters in Times Square.

Gone are the days where sex shops and prostitutes were common in the Crossroads of the World. The area is much more family friendly today. You can find people dressed up as popular cartoon characters on just about any day of the week.

But complaints about the characters are rampant.

From Spider Man to Cookie Monster and even the Statue of Liberty, some of the characters add entertainment, but others exhibit criminal behaviors.

Two people dressed as Lady Liberty were arrested in last 10 days.

In the most recent incident, a man dressed as Spiderman was accused of groping a woman.

In April 2013, Cookie Monster was charged with endangering the welfare of a child

A person dressed as Woody from Toy Story was accused of forcibly groping someone.

The Times Square Alliance is calling on the city to license the characters.

“We think it’s necessary and imperative that the city get involved. That we put in place simple licensing and regulation scheme. There are lots a lot of good guys out here just trying to make a buck. We want to make sure they’re protected as well,” said Gia Storms, Dir. Of Communications, Times Square Alliance

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
