Bensalem Police Arrest Couple After Bristol Pike Hit And Run

Posted: Updated:
BENSALEM, Pa. -

Bensalem Police arrest a boyfriend and girlfriend in connection a fatal hit and run on one of the township’s busiest roadways.

Police said the woman behind the wheel was driving with a suspended license.

They said they received an anonymous tip that officers followed up on into Philadelphia.

It turned out to be credible and now the couple is behind bars in the Bucks County Prison facing serious charges.

Mellissa Rasiul and Stephen Pagano had mixed reactions to our questions as they made the walk from the Bensalem Police Department into court to face a judge.

Rasiul is charged with accidents resulting in death and operating a vehicle without a valid license and her boyfriend Pagano faces one count of tampering with evidence.

“At this point it appears they hid the vehicle from our sight that night. They then took it to a location in Philadelphia, where they did some other things that we really can’t get into right now," Sgt. Bill McVey said.

McVey said Rasiul was behind the wheel of a GMC Pickup Truck when she struck 61-year-old Vincent Peary of Philadelphia.

Peary was walking along the southbound lanes of the 4100 block of Bristol Pike when he was hit.

He was found lying on the shoulder of the busy street around 6:45 yesterday evening, up to seven minutes after he was struck.

Peary later died at the hospital.

“As far as no one seeing it, I’m shocked by that. It is a heavily congested area. No one reported seeing it. People did locate him very quickly and did render aid as much as they could, so we’re thankful for those citizens who did stop," McVey said.

Investigators swarmed the couple’s home on the 700 block of Bridgewater Road Friday afternoon, looking for more evidence in the deadly crash.

McVey said things could be different if the couple stayed at the scene of the accident.

"We like to see people that night get their side of it and see if alcohol plays a part in it, but mainly its talking to them at the time, that’s when they’re truthful, they don’t have time to hide anything or conceal anything. So a lot of times that could be the difference between charges and no charges," he said.

Investigators said drugs or alcohol do not appear to have played a role in this crash.

They plan on searching the vehicle involved for more evidence.

Rasiul's bond was set at 750 thousand dollars and Pagano's was set at 75 thousand dollars.

The couple will be back in court July 2nd.

Timothy Cardinal Dolan gathered religious and city leaders with the focus of how to ease tensions between police and the community in advance of this Saturday's march to protest the death of Eric Garner. Some of the leaders in this group are rarely photographed together, let alone seated at the same table. But they were brought together over concerns about possible protest violence by the cardinal, one of the most powerful figures in the city and who commands respect across the board.
