Officer accused of slitting dog's throat

Posted: Updated:

A Baltimore police officer faces animal cruelty charges after he was accused of slitting the throat of a dog.

Sarah Gossard says Nala, a seven-year-old Shar Pei, went out the back door of their house and wandered into the neighborhood. Nala ended up several blocks away, where police say the dog bit a woman.

Sandy Fleischer, the woman Nala bit, said it wasn’t the dog’s fault.

“I was really trying to help the dog,” said Fleischer with her hand wrapped in a cast. “But I wound up scaring her and that’s when she did bite me.”

Fleischer called police for help. Two officers arrived and then more joined the scene. Fleischer says the police became aggressive with the dog and said an officer had his knee on Nala’s chest.

“You could see them twisting,” said Fleischer. “The dog was screaming and crying in pain.”

“I’m very upset because I’m obviously very sad about all of this," said Gossard. "But I’m also extremely angry because it’s not ok to treat any living being like this.”

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
