Brooklyn rapper Ra Diggs says he gave up gang life

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

It was a dramatic day in federal court on Thursday as an accused Bloods gang leader and rapper on the rise got on the witness stand to testify on his own behalf. Ronald Herron, 32, tried to counter the government's claims that he is a killer drug lord who terrorized his own community.

Herron, known as Ra Diggs, portrays the gritty lifestyle of the streets in his music videos. The aspiring rapper with a long rap sheet of drug and weapons charges tried to convince a jury that he gave up gangbanging for the murderous Mad Dog Bloods to focus on his music after his last prison term.

His childhood friend Shanduke McPhatter said prosecutors are smearing Herron with stereotypes and circumstantial evidence.

Inside the Brooklyn federal courthouse, prosecutors painted a very different picture. They allege that Herron is guilty of racketeering charges for running a drug-dealing operation in the Gowanus housing development where here grew up. They also claim he was involved in three murders and three attempted murders, and introduced his music videos as evidence.

New York City subway riders are getting back service on the G train between Brooklyn and Queens. The return of service comes as the Metropolitan Transportation Authority reopens a tunnel Tuesday that was heavily damaged by Superstorm Sandy. The Greenpoint tunnel has been closed for five weeks for repairs. Shuttle buses were provided between G stops in Queens and Brooklyn during that time.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
