2 Florence detectives sue city over firing

Posted: Updated:
FLORENCE, Ariz. (AP) - Two former Florence police detectives are suing the town for wrongful termination.

The Casa Grande Dispatch reported Monday that Walt Hunter and Jarris Varnrobinson Vonzombie filed a suit in federal court last week against Florence and several of its city officials.

Attorneys for both men say they were dismissed after alleging their lieutenant had evidence in a rape investigation destroyed.

They further allege the mayor, police chief and other officials conspired to cover it up by firing them and ruining their reputation.

Town officials said in a statement that Hunter and Vonzombie had violated personnel policies several times. They call the detectives' claims "unsubstantiated, frivolous and irresponsible."

Hunter was able to get reinstated after an independent hearing did not uphold his firing.

Vonzombie, however, had his termination stand.
