A Visit To Amy's Farm

Posted: Updated:
Ontario, CA -

For 15 years, Amy Owen and her family has worked to educate the Ontario community about farming.

She says "we want them to know their farmer, know where they're getting their food, it's really important to us for them to get connected to their food that way."

Owen grew up on a farm and growing carrots, beets, and greens is something she's known all get life. They flourish in the sun at the educational farm she's created called Amy's Farm. The harvesting is done largely by community volunteers and kids from surrounding schools tour the land, feed farm animals, and learn how to milk cows.

It's a stark contrast to the image of Ontario as a transportation and industrial hub.

But the land where her farm is located is being threatened. The City's master plan has it designated for high density residential use.

Owen says, "our goal is to actually preserve this land that we are on , it may become condos one day and we don't want that to happen, we want to conserve it."

The kids who come through this farm leave with a valuable lesson.

Eleven year old Frankie Gonzalez says, "it's real hard work. It would be sad if this farm is gone. And we won't know where our food is coming from and lots of jobs will be lost."

Other kids say it's a fun experience, like volunteer Jordan Castaneda, "I love the look on other kids faces when they milk the cow for the first time. It's priceless."
