Millennium Park celebrating 10th anniversary

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - Chicago's Millennium Park is getting ready to celebrate a very special anniversary.

When Millennium Park opened on July 16, 2004, the 24.5 acres transformed a Chicago eyesore into a cutting-edge area for architecture, art and music.

Ten years ago, the property was the home of railroad tracks and surface parking lots. The railroad tracks are still under the park about 30 feet down. Now, the park is the city's second largest tourist attraction.

This summer, the city is celebrating the Millennium Park 10th Anniversary Summer Celebration with dozens of free events.

"We have a lot of great stuff going on this summer. Chicagoans are in for a great summer of free programming, including symphony music, Indy rock, jazz, and dance. It's incredible. This is a great summer for attending free events," the director of Millennium Park events said.

He went on to say it means a lot to see families still enjoying everything the park has to offer today.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
