Downtown streets blocked due to suspicious package

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA, Ga. - Several streets were shut down near Underground Atlanta because of a suspicious package Tuesday morning.

The streets affected included: Decatur Street, Wall Street, MLK Jr. Drive and Pryor Street, Alabama Street and Peachtree Street.

Multiple agencies responded to the scene, investigating a mysterious package police discovered in a car parked near the Atlanta Police sub-station at Underground Atlanta.

According to authorities on the scene, the suspicious package was located under the front seat of a car being driven by a fugitive from Banks County. The fugitive, Chester Thomas Akins, 45, was wanted for charges of Criminal Damage to Property under the Family Violence Act and Theft by Taking. Authorities arrested Akins when they identified him.

Banks County deputies had secured a warrant for Akins on June 15. They say he threatened his girlfriend with a bomb, telling her he had placed a "bomb" in the area around their home. Akins’ girlfriend had also reported Akins had taken several things from the residence.

It is unclear why the suspect was approached by local law enforcement or why he was parked near the APD sub-station.

Along with APD, SWAT team units and bomb-sniffing K-9's searched for any harmful devices in the area for about two hours Tuesday morning.

Authorities cleared the scene for traffic and activity to resume around 9 a.m.

There are several shows weekly at 14 different parks throughout the five boroughs. A recent show at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park paid tribute to Pete Seeger. Most of the shows are free and are funded by tickets purchased for the some of the bigger acts.
