OTTAWA, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A 17-year-old boy was found dead after rescue crews pulled a vehicle out of a 70-foot, water-filled quarry in southwest suburban Ottawa Monday night.

The body of Zachary R. Behrens of LaSalle was recovered after witnesses saw a vehicle plunge into the quarry, according to a statement from the LaSalle County Coroner’s office.

About 7 p.m., a 2008 Chevrolet blew a stop at the T-intersection of Main Street and Boyce Memorial Drive, then drove through a fence and into a quarry filled with sand and water, LaSalle County Sheriff’s Sgt. Jay Stachowiak said.

Witnesses saw the vehicle hit the curb, travel over a grassy area, crash through a security fence, then go up and over an embankment before plunging into the water, according to the statement.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.

According to a statement on the LaSalle-Peru Township High School Facebook page, Behrens had graduated in May.

“The LaSalle-Peru Township High School family is deeply saddened by the news of Zachary Behrens’s tragic death Monday night,” the statement read.

The school has crisis personnel available for anyone wishing to seek help, according to the statement.

Ottawa is in LaSalle County, about 50 miles west of Joliet.

Going off to college is an exciting time for the entire family, especially for the upcoming freshman. But with technology, parents can be in touch all the time. What's too much and what's just enough? Freshman move-in day seems to be harder on the parents than the students at Stony Brook University.
