PCSO to announce arrest of 8 cartel scouts - New York News

PCSO deputies arrest 8 cartel lookouts

Posted: Updated:
PINAL COUNTY, Ariz. - Authorities say they have captured and prosecuted a group of "scouts" paid by Mexican drug cartels to be lookouts for drug and human smugglers on Arizona hilltops.

The Pinal County sheriff's and county attorney's offices say they arrested 8 cartel members who were paid to spend numerous days on hilltops overlooking the southern Arizona desert. They used cell phones and digitally-encrypted radios to communicate.

The investigation began in February when Pinal County Sheriff's deputies pulled over a 22-year-old man in Eloy. Garcia was carrying 600 pounds of food, and cans of gasoline. Garcia said he was paid to drop off the supplies to cartel "scouts."

Deputies and border agents arrested 7 suspected lookouts in remote areas a month later. The men told authorities they had spent more than a week in the desert.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
