'Carmageddon' begins

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The massive traffic back-ups have already begun along one of Chicago’s most traveled expressways.

Big rig drivers said that the word is out among truckers to avoid the Kennedy this weekend at all costs.

"Oh yeah the word is out. I am one of those who say you have to have an alternate A plan, a B plan and even a C plan," said Cedric Lewis who plans to stay away from the mess.

He was at the O’Hare Oasis off I-294 Friday afternoon. The tollway is sure to be busy this weekend as more drivers and truckers use it to avoid the dreadful drive into the city on I-90/94.

"When you're riding around out here we have to careful and it would be nice if they gave us a little break," added Lewis.

With the Kennedy construction, there will be no breaks for 18 wheelers.

Unlike cars -- where drivers are recommended to take an alternate street -- truck drivers can't take local lanes and must suffer through the construction zone.

One driver complained," We have to stay on the freeways."

If you dare to share the squeezed in lanes with truckers, they urge you to be careful around them.

"Nobody wants to get stuck behind a truck. We can't blame them, but we can't stop on a dime. They run up and try to get ahead of us," said one trucker.
