9 students arrested after last-day-of-school fights

Posted: Updated:
HARPER WOODS, Mich. (WJBK) - It took about 20 cops to get a handle on the fights that broke out in the parking lot of Harper Woods High School. The superintendent of Harper Woods schools is blaming it partially on social media.

He says a Facebook posts from the night before suggested kids from other schools planned to come here to fight. They never showed up but word had already spread amongst students and they were riled up.

Teens were maced, K9s were set loose and the rowdy reigned Thursday morning at the school.

A fight between two female students may have set off the others.

"It was like a whole flood, cop cars everywhere. It was a lot of kids running," says an anonymous student.

Harper Woods police were outnumbered and overwhelmed, forced to call in back up from other departments.

When asked how bad the fights were, sophomore Jaylen Moffett responded, "On a rate of one through 10 I have to say seven through nine." He may have been one of the few who tried to keep the peace.

"Me, myself, I broke up two or three fights because it was just students going at it, basically. That's all it was. Stuff that happened at the beginning of the school year they're resolving it now," he says.

This should've never happened.

Police wanted the school to stagger release times on the last day of classes to avoid all of the students being let go at once. For whatever reason that didn't happen.

"It let out early. A lot of people started runnning out and fights and all that," one anonymous student says.

"And they had to have the students evacuate the premises immediately," says Moffett.

The beef didn't cool down off campus - it sizzled.

"It was all on the corner going down the street. The police was all behind them, though," says Silas Stephens. The fights migrated to his street. "It was alot of kids it was alot of kids in there. At least a couple of hundred," he says.

In all, nine teens were arrested Thursday. The superintendent lamented the fact the drama could have been avoided.

Last year students were not been released at the same time and there were no fights.

"Harper Woods is pretty wild, not what I expected," an anonymous student says.

No one brought any weapons. There were no reports of serious injuries and no property damage, according to police.

All nine teens arrested are back home now. They're charged with misdemeanors, mainly disorderly conduct, but a few are facing assault and battery charges.

The superintendent says next year they plan to stagger release times for students to prevent the kind of violence that took place Thursday.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
