Frank McCourt, Finally In Court

Posted: Updated:

The anticipated testimony of former Dodger owner Frank McCourt in summary:

He thought fan security was important, but did not involve himself in the details. Security, a key issue in the lawsuit against Mc Court by Bryan Stowe, who was severely beaten in one of the Dodger parking lots in March of 2011.

Rialto residents Louie Sanchez and Marvin Norwood are serving 8 and 4 year sentences respectively, after admitting to assaulting Stowe, who was left severely brain damaged and in need of 24 hour care for the rest of his life.

McCourt is named in a civil lawsuit claiming that security at the stadium was inadequate, and the beating could have been prevented.

In court today, McCourt distancing himself from the actual operation of anything having to do with security, saying “that is why I hire people to do their job”. For example, he said he wasn’t aware that Dodger stadium lighting had not been upgraded for 30 years before Stow was attacked.

He said he wasn’t involved in the decision to reduce the number of uniformed officers in 2011.

In terms of the attack itself, McCourt said he wasn’t aware -until about 24 months after the beating- that the security guards that were supposed to be in the parking lot where the visiting San Francisco Giants fan was attacked were at another location.

McCourt did not comment on his testimony outside court, but he did make a statement saying that “like all Dodger fans, I am appalled at the criminal behavior of Sanchez and Norwood, and make no mistake, they’re the parties responsible for this tragic incident.”

Stowe’s father, David, reacting outside with “I just have to shrug it off, the things he says are for the cameras, to go into the records. But if he would come out, honestly, and say what is going on in his heart, it would be better for him, I think. But our concern is Bryan….”

Attorneys for Stowe say it will take at least $30 million to take care of Bryan for the rest of his life… Trial continues
