Northstar service canceled after freight train derailment near Elk River

Updated:
ELK RIVER, Minn. (KMSP) -

Northstar commuter rail service will resume Saturday after a freight train derailment near Elk River, Minn. shut down all trains early Friday morning. The derailment happened at 2:15 a.m. between Ramsey and Elk River, at the crossing near Jarvis Street and Highway 10.

The 16-car derailment blocked and damaged the train tracks, meaning no Northstar trains could operate Friday morning. Replacement buses continued to serve commuters Friday afternoon and evening. The scene was cleared of derailed cars by 1 p.m. Friday, and Burlington Northern Santa Fe said the tracks would likely be fully-repaired by 8 p.m. Friday.

The derailed train cars were empty and there is no word on what caused them to derail. An Elk River firefighter told Fox 9 the city really "dodged a bullet" that derailed cars weren't carrying oil, as many trains do through the area.
