Ex-Fiesta Bowl boss to start serving sentence

PHOENIX (AP) - The former Fiesta Bowl chief executive is scheduled Friday to start serving an eight-month federal prison sentence for his acknowledged participation in an illegal campaign contribution scheme.

Former bowl leader John Junker was sentenced three months ago for his guilty plea in the scheme in which bowl employees made illegal contributions to politicians and were reimbursed by the nonprofit bowl.

The judge had said Junker had led an otherwise productive life, but still asked employees to make illegal contributions.

The scandal exposed lavish spending and perks that the Fiesta Bowl heaped on lawmakers and employees, but the investigation ended without any criminal charges being filed over those perks.

Junker also was sentenced to probation for his guilty plea to a state charge of solicitation to commit a fraudulent scheme.
