'Carmageddon' on Kennedy Expressway just hours away

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - The warning signs are out: It is safe to say this would be the perfect weekend to avoid the Kennedy Expressway. The massive construction project on the Kennedy will begin on Friday, June 13.

Transportation officials said that work on a 50-year-old bridge will take place on the last three weekends in June, starting Friday at 10 p.m. If you can avoid traveling downtown, do so. It is suggested you ride a train or take an alternate route.

"We're hoping everybody has been taking the warning. The city is open for business. There are lots of shops and festivities this weekend. Come down to the city. But if you have to, there are other means and methods to get around the city," an engineer on the project told FOX 32's Darlene Hill.

Illinois State Police said that the side streets will be filled with thousands of additional cars and drivers need to be mindful of pedestrians and peddlers. Bicyclists say courtesy is a two way street and they hope everyone is careful.

In addition, pack your patience or pay dearly.

State troopers said that they will be looking for people riding the emergency lanes, using cell phones to talk or text, tailgating, or switching lanes without signaling. They also warn drivers to slow down through construction zones in order to keep the crews safe.

The lanes will reopen Monday morning at 5 a.m.
