Cheetah and Dog Form Unlikely Friendship

Posted: Updated:
San Diego, CA - A very unlikely friendship is forming at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

Ruuxa, a six-week old cheetah cub has been spending a lot of time with her puppy pal, Raina a seven-week-old Rhodesian ridgeback.

The two adorable animals have quickly become best friends and will be raised together, becoming lifelong companions.

"They are best friends. They will live together 24 hours a day. We are starting it a lot younger because the cheetah was by himself and did not have any siblings we wanted him to have a companion immediately, because he needed those social skills and that interaction even as he is nursing and growing up," said Susie Ekard, San Diego Zoo Safari Park Animal Training Manager.

They play together, sleep together and spend all day side by side.

The tiny cheetah has been chosen to be raised as an animal ambassador at the Safari Park after he was rejected by his mother because he was the only one born in the litter.

This is typical because a single cub has a low survival rate in the wild.

The Safari Park pairs its cheetah ambassadors with dogs because the dog's body language communicates with the cheetah, telling the animal it has nothing to fear in its surroundings.
