Los Angeles, CA -

(FOX 11 / CNS) A 19-year-old man has died at a hospital after being struck by a hit-and-run driver wile riding a bicycle in South Los Angeles, police said Thursday.

The victim was riding in the 4700 block of South Normandie Avenue around 9:40 p.m. when he was struck. The vehicle, a red or maroon Pontiac or Toyota, left the scene without stopping, said Los Angeles police Sgt. Hendley Hawkins.

From Sandra Endo:

Police are looking for the driver of a car who struck and killed a 19-year old Oscar Toledo who was riding his bike on S. Normandie avenue and West 47th street in South LA Wednesday at around 9:40pm.

Officers say after the vehicle hit the bicyclist the driver sped off.

Distraught family members came to the scene Thursday morning to see the intersection where Toledo was hit.

His mother Maricella Chavez spoke in Spanish through tears saying, "how could somebody tear my son apart and leave him on the street. They not only did they tear him apart they're tearing up my family and they're tearing me apart."

His older sister Izamar Toledo says was always riding his bike or taking the bus, "he was riding home from seeing his girlfriend last night. He was a good guy always helping out around the house and helping with bills."

Rodrigo Malagon worked a construction job with him from time to time and said "he was always riding his bike, I think he was going home".

He added, "it's very sad, his mom is very sad since she's a single mom."

Area residents say drivers race down S. Normandie and don't obey speed limits. It's also a popular thoroughfare for cyclists who tend to ride on the sidewalks in fear of the fast traffic.
