NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - Miles and miles of traffic extended into New Jersey Thursday from the George Washington Bridge following a deadly crash on the eastbound upper level of the span.

Two tractor-trailers collided shortly before 2:30 a.m. killing one of the drivers and seriously injuring the other, said police.

Their names were not immediately released and the cause of the crash remained under investigation.

Both trucks were removed by late morning allowing for the opening of the inbound, upper level lanes which were closed, intermittently, for about nine hours.

Some of the span's other lanes were also closed during the traffic nightmare.

Traffic on the New York side of the bridge was also impacted with delays on the Cross Bronx Expressway.

Traffic reporter Ines Rosales recommended motorists headed into New York City use Fletcher Ave. in Fort Lee to get onto the lower level of the bridge or consider alternate routes.

Traffic was flowing normally at the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels for the start of the morning commute, but that quickly changed at both crossings where delays remained extensive throughout the morning.

NJ Transit was cross-honoring on rail and buses into and out of New York Penn Station.

Immediately following the collision, cars were stuck on the bridge for more than two hours as Port Authority officials shut down the lanes while the Bergen County Prosecutor arrived and assessed the deadly incident, according to a report from the scene.

The vehicles were allowed to back up off the bridge at about 5:30 a.m. using an emergency vehicle exit.

At 7 a.m., a divider on the outbound lanes was removed to allow drivers to make a U-turn back into New Jersey.
