Illinois voters could register on Election Day

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Associated Press) - Illinois voters could register to vote on Election Day, have more time to cast early ballots and not be required to bring photo identification to vote early under a plan state lawmakers have approved.

Democrats pushed the legislation on the second-to-last day of the spring session last month with the idea that it'll improve November turnout. However, Republicans claim it is part of a larger effort to boost Democrats' numbers at the polls.

Gov. Pat Quinn favors the plan but hasn't signed it yet. The Chicago Democrat seeking re-election told reporters Wednesday that the Republican claims were "baloney."

The proposal only applies to the upcoming November election. Bill sponsors say they'll extend it beyond November if things go smoothly.

Ten states allow same-day voter registration.

The bill is HB105.
