Police: Boy attacked by dog, then accidentally shot

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - A 7-year-old boy is recovering in the hospital after first being attacked by a dog and then being shot. Police say the shooter appears to have been trying to stop the attack and believe the shooting of the boy was accidental.

The incident happened at Pamela Boutchee's house on Sunday night.

"It was just a horrible scene," says Boutchee.

The dog, a pitbull terrier named Big Boy, was killed and the boy was rushed to the hospital.

Boutchee says his mother is a family friend and the boy was warned time and time again not to go into the backyard.

"A pitbull terrier, and that was it. They're no joke. And the little boy is 7. He's a little 7, a little 7-year-old," says Boutchee.

Police say someone saw the dog attacking the boy and ran over from across the street gun drawn.

Pamela says the dog may have been shot three or four times.

It's unclear if the boy was shot outright or if one of those rounds went through the terrier and struck the 7-year-old.

Police say no shell casings were found and the identity of the gunman is unknown.

"Maybe he didn't want to be known. I guess he didn't because we've been waiting for him to come back and say 'It was me' or 'How's the little boy' or anything to know or to even say thank you for saving the little boy because he would have died," says Boutchee.

Boutchee says Sunday was the first time the dog attacked anyone.

Police say it's unlikely the dog's owner will face any charges.

Investigators from Detroit police are searching for the person who shot that 7-year-old boy.

They believe the shooting was unintentional but that person could still face charges.
