Smiles For Scarlette

Posted: Updated:

Baby Scarlette Tipton was born five months ago with an abnormally large, left arm. It measures approximately three times the size of her right arm. Doctors say this is an extremely rare condition. It's been incredibly difficult to determine the exact reason for Scarlette's large arm. Doctors have given Scarlette's parents different diagnosis, the latest is Undifferentiated Sarcoma, a very rare childhood cancer.

Scarlette's sarcoma is a cancer of connective tissues--- muscles, fat and bones. So far, doctors have removed two cancerous tumors from this tiny baby. But her arm remains abnormally large. Her father Mathew says he's worried about his daughter having a normal life, "It's pretty much guaranteed that she will never be, by society's standards normal. But we just want to make life as easy as possible for her." The family says they're going public with Scarlette's condition because they're looking for more answers. Since they've received so many different diagnosis, they're not quite sure what to believe. Simone Tipton says, "There's been only 42 cases of it ever reported. We're trying to reach people who maybe, their story wasn't published and maybe that's why we don't know about it."

Scarlette started chemotherapy on Friday. Doctors are trying to prevent the cancer from spreading further. As you might imagine, the bills are astronomical. Friends and family have started a fundraiser called Smiles for Scarlette.
