A Modest “Promposal” With An Important Message

Posted: Updated:
Union, New Jersey (My9NJ) - Its prom time for high schools across the Garden State and Union High School history teacher Nicholas Ferroni is hoping to teach his students a very valuable lesson about bullying and redemption.

Ferroni was named one of the 25 fittest men in the world by Men’s Fitness Magazine and one of the 100 most influential people in America due to his commitment to education reform and one of his latest school lessons is gaining a lot of attention right now.

Ferroni invited model Brittany Mason to talk to his students about her horrible past of being bullied in high school and how they can help stop bullying in their school.

In fact, Mason never had the chance to go to her prom a decade ago due to the horrible treatment she encountered in high school, but Ferroni, as a chaperone for Union High School’s prom, changed all of that. With help from his students, he sent her what is called a “promposal” through the social media app Vine, asking her to be his date.

While Mason may seem to have a lot of things going for her now, the story of her past is a sad one. She spoke candidly to Mr. Ferroni’s students about her struggles with being bullied by upperclassmen, and how it ultimately led to her attempting to take her own life by poisoning herself.

“I wanted it all to end and I didn’t know what the answer would be other than taking my own life. So I attempted suicide,” she shared to the class.

After that incident, Mason promised herself that if she would made it through, then she would spend her life advocating against bullies. She now urges students to speak out and to intervene when they witness bullying.

“How important it is to be an up-stander rather than a by-stander and to lend a hand to someone else,” she said.

Mason has also started a foundation called #iampossible that advocates for unity and acceptance in this often cruel world.

Redemption has been huge for Brittany. Since high school she has appeared for major brands and publications like Vogue, Sports Illustrated, Bebe, GQ, Esquire and Seventeen and Maxim Magazine.

In the end, bullying can take any face, even pretty ones, and redemption can come in many forms, but bullied youth must understand there is always hope and there is always help.

The town of Hoboken, New Jersey is cracking down on Uber cars driving in and picking up passengers in the city. Uber is an app that you can use to request a car service to pick you up, but city officials say they are not licensed to operate in town. Marcus Enriquez was actually thrown out of an Uber car by a Hoboken police officer. He said he was on his way to work outside of the Hoboken taxi stand when a cop knocked on the window, kicked him out of the car and ticketed the Uber driver.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
