WWII veterans remembered in Waxhaw

Posted: Updated:
Museum of the Waxhaws honored World War II veterans on Saturday.

Hundreds of folks throughout Union County came to the museum just one day after the 70th anniversary of D-Day.

Reenactments from the 82nd Airborne were present with military vehicles, medical and station tents and dozens of military gear.

Lonnie Morin, a 94-year old Charlotte resident, was in attendance. Morin is a World War II veteran and was also at Omaha Beach -- one of the five sectors in the Normandy landings on D-Day.

Morin said he arrived to Omaha at 10 a.m. on June 6, 1944.

"Activities of war keep you pretty busy," Morin said. "You don't have time to think."

Morin was on a ship that brought soldiers in and out of Normandy. He said he doesn't remember much -- but one of the first things he saw continues to stick out.

"I saw a man floating in the water," Morin said. "He had been on an amphibious tank which had sunk and he was the only survivor."

Over 5,000 ships and 13,000 aircraft were used on the D-Day invasion. Over 9,000 allied soldiers were killed or wounded but it eventually led to not only the end of the war for Germans but Adolf Hitler, too.

"Well it all seems as if it happened to somebody else, it was so long ago," Morin said.

To some, the violence in Gaza seems a world away, but to one family here in Charlotte it is hitting far too close to home. Issam al-Araj and his family live in Charlotte, but his siblings and their children live in Palestine. His nephew, Mohammad al-Araj was shot and killed on July 24 -- his 17th birthday -- during a demonstration north of Jerusalem.
