Vietnam Vet Takes Down Beat Up Flags

Posted: Updated:

CINCINNATI, O.H.- There are few things more important to veterans who have fought for our country, than the symbol of our freedom, the American flag.

One veteran in Ohio took it upon himself to see that symbol taken care of.

For weeks now, Vietnam Veteran James Chadwell has seen the symbol he fought for torn to shreds.

"They are ripped. The white is gray. It's disgraceful," explains Chadwell.

On Friday, he couldn't take the disgrace any longer.

"Old men shouldn't have to do this," said Chadwell.

He decided to fight for the flag once again.

"I'm hoping that all I gotta do is take this one down and they'll be embarrassed and do the right thing," he added.

U.S. Bank Arena says the flags are changed once every four months, and would have been replaced in less than 20 days.

Not soon enough for Chadwell.

"It's just more than I could stand. I told them yesterday that if they were not down by this morning, I was going to bring my ladder and come back and take them down," he said.

Police escorted Chadwell off the property, and less than three hours later, he got exactly what he came for.

"Memorial Day, one of the most sacred holidays in America where you honor the war dead was two weeks ago and those disgraceful flags were flying then," explained Chadwell.
