Lewis Katz Funeral Service

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA (My9NJ.com) - Yesterday the funeral was held for Lewis Katz who died tragically in a plane crash in Massachusetts on his way home from a fundraiser.

Katz is well known for his involvement in everything from business endeavors, politics and philanthropy.

Among those in attendance to pay their respects were Nets basketball coach Jason Kidd, former Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Bill Cosby and former President Bill Clinton who took to the podium to share a special memory.

“We went in ’92 and we had this big fundraiser, Lew’s the head of it. So we’re sitting up there and I noticed he was a little nervous. I said, ‘this is a great turnout what are you nervous about?’, he said ‘look before I get up to introduce you, you have to lean over and whisper in my ear’, I said ‘ok what do you want me to say?’ he said ‘I don’t care say anything you want, but if you whisper in my ear, they’ll think I’m close to you and I can get them to give more money’. So he’s about to get up and I whispered ‘Lew you’re a putz’,” Clinton recalled.

Senator Cory Booker was also on hand. He had a special relationship with the entrepreneur because he is best friends with Katz’ son. Booker took the podium as well to share a story.

“Days before my senatorial campaign was really getting going, we’re having a long conversation over the telephone and Lewis tells me, ‘Cory don’t think your anything special if you get elected into the United States Senate because any idiot can get elected to office, in fact most idiots do’,” Booker shared.

While this was a very sad time for friends and family of Katz, yesterday’s service was more of a celebration of his life.

“If more of us acted on our better impulses and then kept our commitments on our better impulses, even if it took us five years to do it, think what a different world we would be living in today,” Clinton concluded.

The overall emotion in the room really proved that Katz was a good man who used his money for good things.
