Bogota Mayor Punched By 80 Year-Old Father Of Political Opponent

Posted: Updated:
Bogota, New Jersey (My9NJ) - The story of Bogota Mayor Tito Jackson getting punched by the 80 year-old father of his political opponent has gained national attention. Mayor Jackson gave a play-by-play of the moments leading up to the father of a political nemesis, town council candidate Tina Trotta, punching him in the face Tuesday in the parking lot of a polling place. He says the whole situation is a disgrace.

“It gives a black eye to our town and I’m embarrassed for his behavior,” he said.

The Mayor says 80 year-old Salvatore Trotta was waiting for him by his truck at the far end of the parking lot when he left the Bogota Recreational Center where he had just cast his vote.

“I extended my hand to him to shake his hand and he then told me he was Tina Trotta’s father,” Jackson explained.

Mr. Trotta made accusations that the police were following his daughter and took issue with the mayor cutting down trees in a nearby lot across the street.

“I then attempted to call the Bogota police. He knocked the phone out of my hand and he pushed me. I started to walk back,” Jackson recalled.

At least one poll worker was outside when Sal Trotta refused to step aside and eventually hit the mayor in the side of the head.

The mayor says Tina Trotta, a Republican candidate who just lost her bid for city council, is suing the town for cutting down trees near Oscar E. Olsen Park across the street. Several attempts were made to contact Ms. Trotta to no avail.

The website PolitickerNJ is reporting Sal Trotta’s side of the story. He reportedly claims Mayor Jackson referred to Trotta’s daughter as “nothing but a money hungry piece of s***’. That’s when Trotta admits he punched the mayor. The site also reports Trotta plans to sue the mayor for assaulting him.

“There is no truth to that. Absolutely not,” Jackson confirmed.

He does admit however that he told Mr. Trotta he didn’t think someone who was suing the town should be running for council. The mayor makes it clear he was the victim here. Jackson has made his statement to police and he hopes Mr. Trotta will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
