Police: Fight between neighbors may have escalated to murder

Posted: Updated:
EASTPOINTE, Mich (WJBK) – An argument between neighbors may have escalated to a murder Wednesday morning, according to police.

Police say the neighbors were having a dispute in the driveway of a home in the 17700 block of Lincoln Avenue. The dispute escalated and a man in his 40s shot and killed a 57-year-old man. The suspect is in police custody.

"I've never had any problems with neither one of the neighbors. This is all a shock to me," Mikail Campos tells FOX 2's Ron Savage.

He heard an argument Wednesday morning between the man in his 40s who live in the house with the cream-colored shutters. Campos says he argued with his next door neighbor, the 57-year-old man, who lived in the house with the green shutters.

That 57-year-old man was shot and killed, according to police.

He was laying in the driveway between the two houses when police arrived. They arrested the accused next door neighbor shooter without incident.

"I believe that the victim owed him money. I don't know exactly; I just know that the commotion was going on in between the two houses there. And I was upstairs in my bedroom, right here, so I could hear it. And I heard, you know, over the money, and 'You're going to pay me the money!' and that, and the next thing I know is the gunshot went off and I just can't believe he's gone," says Campos.

Neighbors say police picked up and removed a rifle from the scene. Police would confirm, but said the victim died of a single gunshot wound and they say they're investigating the reason for the dispute.

"There was some kind of confrontation and argument. we don't know the details and the exact matter that was being talked about," says Easpointe Police Director John McNeilance.

The accused shooter has not been charged with a crime but is being held for questioning.

Going off to college is an exciting time for the entire family, especially for the upcoming freshman. But with technology, parents can be in touch all the time. What's too much and what's just enough? Freshman move-in day seems to be harder on the parents than the students at Stony Brook University.
