Detroit officials respond to neighbors who want crumbling buildings torn down

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - A crumbling building has been forcing neighbors living near Ward and Grand River to walk in the street, and another down the block is on the verge of crumbling as well. But now, their calls for help could be answered.

FOX 2's Erika Erickson first shared their story Monday night.

Now, they tell her officials with the city came to look at the abandoned building that appears to be well on its way to cracking in half.

"They did have a city inspector out here this morning taking pictures," William Caruthers says. "That crack right there is wider than - one more half inch or quarter over and it should be ready to come down."

As well as another building down the block that has already started crumbling down.

"Somebody got hurt from that one. We made a complaint about it when the bricks fell," Caruthers says.

Neighbors told FOX 2 Monday night the building has been vacant for decades and their calls to police and the city have gone unanswered. Many neighbors say they are stuck walking in the street to avoid it.

"I'm tired of walking in the street. I might get hit by a car," says Paula Lampkin.

"Grand River is a busy street. You know, a lot of people don't do the speed limit so it's not good for the kids," says Caruthers.

Tuesday, Tracy Marshall, who is sick of worrying about someone getting hurt, wrapped caution tape around the dangerous building.

"Somebody [has] to stand up, and if it takes a little mediocre guy like me to come out here and make a chance, then it has to happen," Marshall says.

But now - help is here.

The mayors office tells FOX 2 Tuesday after the inspection that morning both buildings are now considered demolition emergencies. Notices were posted on both buildings and they will be up for contractor bids by Wednesday to be torn down absolutely no later than two weeks from now.
