According to the Salisbury Police Department, the West End community has an increasing crime rate. The people who call that area home say they remember when it was safe. The department now has a plan to combat crime, but needs the community’s support.

Kenny Harden says a bullet went through his family’s home a few months ago. It went across the bedroom mattress and struck a counter.

“If somebody is laying right here in this bed, this is the trajectory of the bullet. So it would have been a fatal shot,” he said.

Rory Collins, Salisbury’s chief of police, says he’s enforcing his team to be more visible in the area

“You have to have a partnership. With any partnership, there has to be a level of trust and there has to be a relationship,” Collins said.

The department has a new plan to build that trust by creating a community relations officer position, changing the patrol territories and starting a street crimes unit.

The department realizes that there are people emotionally invested in the community…

They both agree that it will take a village to stop the violence… What they both said needs to happen is more opportunity for dialogue, not a “talking at,” but a “talking to” approach.
