Posted: Updated:

Fox 29 has learned a school police officer that was found unresponsive at George Washington High School in Northeast Philadelphia Monday has died.

The School District of Philadelphia says the identity of the police officer is Sgt. Daryl Giles, 50, a 19-year veteran of the district, and long-time officer at the school.

The district says school staff found Giles unresponsive from an unknown medical emergency in the bathroom on Monday afternoon.

School district sources say he Giles complained of chest pains earlier in the day.

Multiple witnesses say hours before his death, Giles broke up a fight between students. Police say three students were arrested in the fight. They are facing disorderly conduct charges.

Giles was taken to Holy Redeemer Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

There's a lot of emotion at the school tonight because Fox 29 was told the victim was very popular among the students.

Meanwhile, parents of students at George Washington High School say they were left in the dark while everything was unfolding.

"The second they locked those kids down, the parents should have been aware," said one parent.

Grief counselors will be on hand at the school on Tuesday.
