FOX 13 anchor Anne Dwyer announces retirement

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA (FOX 13) - She's been part of our mornings for decades, but after nearly 30 years with FOX 13, Anne Dwyer has announced her retirement.

"It was not an easy decision," Dwyer said Friday morning on Good Day Tampa Bay. "It's time for me to sleep in, get some much needed rest, and tackle the numerous home improvement projects I have put off way too long."

Anne was anchoring the morning news back when Ernie Lee was still playing his guitar on WTVT’s morning show. She joined WTVT back in 1986 after getting her start in her home state of Illinois.

Her unassuming and down-to-earth manner defied the typical definition of a news anchor and endeared her to Bay Area viewers. But behind the camera, she's been a stickler for accuracy and fairness, and has guided so much of what we see on Good Day every day.

Before she was a fixture in the mornings, Anne covered the medical beat for WTVT. Her poignant 'Cradle Crisis' series about care for premature infants won an Emmy award.

More recently, her 'Cheap Trick' segments have become legendary in the Bay Area.

Anne's retirement will give her a chance to spend more time with her husband Nick and their two sons.

Her last day on air will be June 18.

"I want to thank you, our viewers, for inviting me into your home all these years," Dwyer said Friday morning.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
