Dangerous toxins found at LI park

Posted: Updated:

BRENTWOOD, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say dangerous toxins have been detected in debris at a Long Island town park and a nearby private property.

Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota says the cleanup of Roberto Clemente Park in Brentwood could take months - if not years.

Spota announced the results of testing at the park and a private site in Central Islip on Thursday.

According to Newsday, he said about 50,000 tons of contaminated construction and demolition debris was deposited at the park.

He says some of the materials found in the samples are either "hazardous" or "acutely hazardous."

Spota says debris found earlier this month at a wetlands site in Deer Park was dumped by the same individuals.

Investigators launched a criminal probe into the illegal dumping seven weeks ago.
