Evacuation orders lifted for Oak Creek Canyon

Posted: Updated:
SEDONA, Ariz. - For people living in Oak Creek Canyon, it's time to go home after an evacuation order was lifted just a few hours ago.

After a 10 day evacuation, the first ones through the roadblock weren't sure what to expect.

"I love the canyon, and I have fears about what happened to it, and I know in my lifetime it will never be the same," said John Hildebrand.

Shortly after the Slide Fire broke, emergency crews gave the evacuation to about 300 homes and businesses.

"What you're thinking about is everything you have is there, and do you have time to break everything down and get out, and I was fortunate enough that I did have time to do that," said Frank Rowley.

Frank Rowley runs a campground in the evacuation zone. "It was pretty surreal going by the campground and seeing everybody's tents and everything that everybody left," said Rowley.

For now, only residents and business owner will be allowed past the roadblock, a ribbon on the car proves an evacuee has been cleared to go home.

APS is still working to restore power to all its customers, but that isn't stopping people like Vince Calla from heading home.

"It has been a long ten days; I'm just anxious to get back home," said Calla. He's spent the past ten days staying with family in Phoenix.

"I am a homebody; I can't wait to get back home, I have been displaced couch surfing taking birdbaths, it is not a good thing for me," he said.

"Everybody is telling how nice my house is, so I guess it is in one piece," said Calla.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
