Man steals $11,000 from church during service

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A thief went into the rectory of a Manhattan church while mass was underway and stole $11,000, according to the NYPD.

It happened on Sunday afternoon at the Immaculate Conception Church on East 14th St.

The suspect swiped the cash from a night stand in a third floor bedroom of the East Village church rectory.

Surveillance video shows the man roaming the building at about 1:15 p.m.  The man reportedly encountered the church's music director in the basement and said he was looking for his "Aunt Maria."

The NYPD is searching for the man. He was described as ligh skined, and he was wearing a black baseball hat, brown shorts, white sneakers and a red T-shirt.
