Southgate woman, 92, tied up during home invasion

Posted: Updated:
SOUTHGATE, Mich. (WJBK) - A 92-year-old woman was trapped in her own home while two home invaders surrounded her Southgate house trying to find a way inside.

We are concealing her identity for her own safety but she decided to tell her heartbreaking story hoping the perpetrators would be caught.

"I should have run out the front door but I didn't and they pounded on the door and broke the door down, come in and [said] 'Where's the money? Where's the money?' I don't have any money," the woman tells FOX 2's Taryn Asher.

The woman had barely woken up 9:30 a.m. Wednesday when she says two young men kicked in her steel door, tied her up and rummaged the house looking for valuables.

"They blindfolded me and gagged me, tied my hands," she says. "I just wanted to die. I just wanted to die."

The woman was scared for her life and offered anything she had hoping that the two thieves, who didn't appear to have a weapon, would not hurt her.

"I asked him, I said, 'Why are you doing this?' I said, 'You're such a handsome kid. Why? You have a mother, too.' He just looked at me and said, 'Quiet.'"

The victim wasn't comfortable with cameras inside her house but gave FOX 2's Taryn Asher a look. Asher reports the house was ransacked and the men got away with jewelry, a small amount of money and a television.

The terrifying ordeal lasted 45 minutes. The men made off with what they could including her 2001 black Ford Taurus. Police are actively looking for the vehicle with the Michigan license plate BVK 7800.

Shortly after they left the woman was able to break free and call for help.

She has lived in the home for 65 years and says the incident has not made her want to move.
