'Kale' and other off-beat baby names

Posted: Updated:
MYFOXNY.COM -

For expecting parents, saying the name is easy once they can come up with one. Different parents have different ways to unearth a calling their children will carry for their lifetime.

Now there's an extra name available to parents: "Kale." That's right: the popular leafy salad component is the new "Apple" when it comes to baby names. In 2013, 262 babies were named "Kale," according to the Social Security Administration. And yet, another surprise, for us anyway.

Babynamewizard.com tracks name popularity. The visualization shows "Kale" has boxed out other edible names, including "Peaches," "Ginger," "Pepper," and yeah, "Apple."

"Kale" may be making its way into everyone's diets. But not all parents, however, are biting.

How much more popular "Kale" gets from here is anyone's guess. Last year, 27 babies were named "Apple" even all these years after Gwenth Paltrow named her child after the delicious fruit.

Which leads us to wonder: what other up and coming healthy foods might be the next kale? "Quinoa"? We checked. Not yet.
