Oak Creek Canyon evacuation order ends Thursday

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) - An evacuation order that forced residents and business from a scenic northern Arizona canyon over a week ago due to a wildfire is being lifted.

Coconino County officials announced Wednesday night that the evacuation order for Oak Creek Canyon will be lifted at 1 p.m. MST Thursday.

Residents will be required to show identification to sheriff's deputies at a roadblock before being allowed to enter.

Electricity is expected to be restored to all homes in the affected area by 4 p.m. Friday.

The Slide Fire began near Slide Rock State Park in the canyon between Sedona and Flagstaff on May 20.

The fire has burned 21,067 acres so far, but containment has reached 55 percent. Crews are working on rehabbing and mopping up the area. The cost of fighting the fire is estimated at $8 million.

The Red Cross says their shelter in the area is closed due to the improved conditions.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
