Wildland firefighter spouses; couple celebrates 9th anniversary apart

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Hundreds of wildland fire fighters are battling the slide fire, leaving behind families for days on end.

"I'm used to this," says Terri Victor, "I don't hardly see him during the summer. It's a little tough and challenging raising five kids while he's gone," she says.

Terri Victor's husband Marvin Victor was a hotshot firefighter for 14 years, and is now a wildland firefighter with the city of Flagstaff. Marvin is among the nearly 1,000 firefighters battling the Slide Fire.

Today-- the couple's ninth anniversary together-- will be spent apart.

"He usually buys me roses or pretty much tries to take me out...I love him so much," she says.

Terri says right now her heart is with the families of the Granite Mountain Hot Shots-- the 19 elite wildland firefighters killed in the Yarnell Hill fire last year. Terri used to be wildland firefighter. She knows the risk.

"It's really hard knowing that they are at risk and just knowing that feeling of them not coming back or returning. It's heartbreaking and you got to prepare yourself for that," she says.

Now on the other side, Terri joins the hundreds of spouses just waiting for their loved ones safe return.

"All I can do is just pray for him and his team," she says.
