Prescription Drug Addiction Plaguing NJ Youth

Posted: Updated:
Riverside, New Jersey (My9NJ) - Two twelve year-old boys have been charged with distributing prescription pills at the Riverside Middle School. The boys are now facing charges of: Distribution of a controlled dangerous substance within 500 feet of a public park, distribution of a controlled dangerous substance within 1,000 feet of a school, distribution of prescription pills, and possession or use of prescription pills.

The pills that the boys had on them were Ambien sleeping pills and it’s alleged that one of the boys took them from his medicine cabinet at home.

Jersey Shore University Medical Center Pediatrician Dr. Steven Kairys said that this problem is widespread and he sees it all the time.

“We see kids addicted as early as 9th grade, 10th grade. Obviously as you get to 11th grade, 12th grade, college it goes up,” he explained.

Prescription drugs are said to be a gateway drug to other harder substances like cocaine and heroin and Dr. Kairys says this is becoming an epidemic in the Garden State.

“Heroin’s become a big drug even in the population of adolescence because it’s cheap, it’s easy to get, it’s much cheaper than cocaine these days, cheaper than marijuana so we’re seeing a lot of that also now beginning to rise,” he said.
