Brooklyn city councilman offers community lactation station

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

So you're in downtown Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, shopping and you need to breast feed or express milk but you don't want to do it in public. Now you have a private place to go: a community lactation station equipped with a breast pump, inside a city councilman's office. It is getting a great response.

City Councilman Robert Cornegy Jr. and his wife came up with the idea after their personal experiences. The couple has six children and had gotten negative comments when his wife breast-fed in public.

So now the councilman has a lactation room at his office in Bed-Stuy where any mom can comfortably and privately breast feed or express milk and then store it in a refrigerator while they shop or run errands.

The councilman agrees that women have the right to breast-feed wherever and whenever their child is hungry, but said the room provides moms with a safe and private place to do so if they prefer it. So far, about 50 moms have used the room, he says.

Cornegy is hoping the idea catches on with other elected officials who will do the same in their districts.
