Should the U.S. have menstrual leave?

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

While the menstrual cycle may be still a sensitive topic to talk about for many women, most are taught young to tough it out. So the idea of asking your boss for sick day by telling him or her you have your period may sound unheard of if not embarrassing.

But many other countries have had something called menstrual leave for decades.

In 1947 just after World War II when many women had and were entering the workforce, Japan instituted menstrual leave. The law said any women suffering from painful periods are allowed leave work.

In fact, Dr. Tara Shirazian, a Mount Sinai gynecologist, says it can be hard to go work for some women during their cycle.

Many of the countries that have menstrual leave don't have as much paid sick leave as many companies have here in the United States. So for now I guess we will continue to poke fun of Mother Nature.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
