MTA may delay replacing MetroCard system

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The 20-year-old MTA MetroCard system is near the end of its useful life, according to several of the transit authority's past chairmen. But the MTA has indicated it may keep the MetroCard until 2020 as it phases in a new system.

A MTA spokesman said in part: "We have an aggressive schedule for a new fare payment system in place... We have also taken preliminary steps to... take the MetroCard system out to 2023."

Last week, turnstiles rejected MetroCards at the 23rd Street F stop. Frustrated commuters went through the exit door and others jumped the turnstiles, skipping the fare.

The MTA said the magnetic readers on the turnstiles at that station were dirty and that, overall, there is no problem with MetroCards.

And the future? The MTA spokesman offered this timetable:

2016 or 2017: start phase-out of MetroCard

2019: have new system in place

2020: State of Good Repair currently funded through 2020

But the Straphangers Campaign noted the MTA failed with using chips in bank cards to pay fares two years ago, so commuters should expect a bumpy ride ahead.

The MTA is still considering a new system like a chip in a bank card or a smartphone, like the system used to pay at Starbucks.
