Fraser police catch gas station scammers in undercover sting

Posted: Updated:
FRASER, Mich. (WJBK) - Police say two men face criminal charges after their plan to scam a local business was thwarted by authorities.

An employee at a Marathon gas station in Fraser received a strange phone call Thursday evening. The employee, who wishes to remain anonymous, tells FOX 2's Erika Erickson the caller was pretending to be his boss, said they owed money to a gas supplier and that he was sending someone to collect the money.

The employee suspected the call was a phony for a few reasons. He says he didn't recognize the voice or the phone number, and that his so-called boss was suggesting to do business differently than they usually do.

So, the employee agreed with the caller, hung up the phone and then called his real boss who called police.

Fraser police then showed up undercover and waited for the scammers to arrive.

Around 10:15 p.m. two men in their 20s came in looking for the money.

The employee handed over the money and the men walked out, but were then arrested.

The two men are currently out on bond and are awaiting charges of larceny by trick and conspiracy.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
