Container gardens are just as unique and diverse as gardens. Today we are going to plant a container specifically for shady porches, balconies, patios or gardens.

The Key to Container Garden Success

  • Drainage
  1. Make sure your pot or container has a hole in the bottom
  • Soil
  1. Use a good quality potting mix in containers, not a planting mix
  2. Pike Potting & Container Soil is light and nutrient rich which is essential for container gardens


Planting a Container Garden

  • Fill your pot about 3-4 full with Pike Potting Soil
  • Select plants that thrive in the shade during spring and summer.
Caladium
  1. Beautiful foliage
  2. Many different varieties with color variations in green, white, pink and red.

Coleus

  1. Great filler plant for containers
  2. Many different varieties to choose from with colors ranging from Chartreuse green, pink, red, and bronze

New Guinea Impatiens

  1. Great foliage and large flowers
  2. Blooms all summer
  3. Green or Bronze foliage – Red, white, pink, orange or purple flowers

Begonias

  1. Traditional begonias with bronze or green leaves, red, pink or white flowers
  2. Dragon Wing begonias – much taller variety with large leaves – and red, pink, or white flowers
  3. Rex Begonias – great patterned foliage

Torenia

  1. Known as the Wishbone Flower
  2. Trailing habit makes it a great spiller for containers
  3. White, pink, blue, purple and multicolored blooms.

Ferns

  1. Ferns give a lot of texture in a container
  2. Perennial ferns like Autumn fern and Holly fern can be planted in containers and enjoyed year after year
  3. Annual ferns like Bird’s nest Fern, Maidenhair fern, and Asparagus fern are great for spring and summer container gardens

Hostas

  1. Great foliage comes in many different sizes, shapes and colors
  2. Sizes range from large varieties like ‘Sum ‘n Substance’ to the tiny ‘Blue Mouse Ears’

Coral Bells
