D'oh! Deer rescued after falling into spa

PALM HARBOR (FOX 13) -

Pinellas County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a bizarre call Thursday morning. A deer had crashed through a screened-in fence surrounding a pool and was trapped inside a family's hot tub.

Mike Wyers and his wife noticed two deer in their backyard around 10 a.m.

"We saw one go into the bushes and saw another one actually enter and hit our screened in pool area," Wyers said.

He thinks lawn crews cutting grass spooked the deer, and one ran right into their fence.

"The deer actually had knocked herself out cold in our spa," Wyers said.

They didn't know what to do, so they called the sheriff's office for help.

Deputies Tim McTaggart and Kevin Lewis took the call they initially though was for a deer trapped inside a screened-in fence.

McTaggart said he thought, 'just open the gate,' but "when I actually arrived and saw the pool here, I was like, 'uh-oh.'"

McTaggart tossed a blanket over the small doe's head to keep it calm and unaware.

Moments later, an animal trapper arrived and jumped right in the hot tub with the deer.

McTaggart reached down and grabbed the doe by the head at first to hold it still, then took it by the legs and lifted it from the hot tub.

"Once we got it up onto the side, I kind of eased it towards where it came in and watched it run off," he said.

The deer was a bit woozy and had to gain back its bearings. The trapper and both deputies followed it back to the tree line, and it took off.

McTaggart and the Wyers' family had heard of gators and snakes getting into pools but never deer.

"This is one of my feel-good stories of being a law enforcement officer," McTaggart said. "Because it has a happy ending."
