BRENTWOOD, Tenn. (AP) - Eastern Illinois quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has been selected as the Ohio Valley Conference's male athlete of the year for 2013-14.

The league announced Garoppolo's honor Tuesday as voted on by OVC athletic directors and sports information directors.

Garoppolo became only the fifth OVC quarterback drafted when picked by the NFL's New England Patriots in the second round last week.

He won the Walter Payton Award as the national player of the year in the Football Championship Subdivision. He led Eastern Illinois to a 12-2 record and second straight league title. He completed 66 percent of his passes for 5,050 yards and 53 touchdowns with only nine interceptions last season.

Garoppolo will receive his award May 30 in Nashville.
