Newark Mayoral Election Day

Posted: Updated:
Newark, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

Tonight we will officially have a victor in the Newark mayoral election between Ras Baraka and Shavar Jeffries. Throughout the race money was pouring into both campaigns as the two battled it out to see who will run New Jersey’s biggest city. However, not all of the candidates are happy about the massive amount of money this election drew.

“It’s absolutely a sad day in Newark when we allow somebody like George Norcross (Philadelphia Inquirer Co-Managing Parented and Director) to spread his tentacles all the way up the turnpike and come here in Newark, but I don’t think Newark is gonna allow that. We don’t want that to happen,” Baraka explained.

Yesterday Jeffries held a campaign event in Bellville where he also spoke about the money coming in. He made the distinction that while most of the funding is coming from Wall Street, he believes these are the people that support his message.

“To the extent we have some people who are wealthy who are from Wall Street, they don’t have any interest in the city of Newark. They believe in what we believe in,” Jeffries said.

This election has become a huge focus for some of the biggest money donors throughout New Jersey. In fact, experts say that this is the most money that has ever been spent on a Newark mayoral election. But many people across the state want to know why now? Why this election? Former Mayor Sharpe James spoke on just that.

“Why Newark? Newark has a seaport. Newark has an airport. Newark has one of the best highway systems in the world,” he explained.

James also had some advice for the future mayor. He said to be careful about accepting all this money from donors because they’re going to expect something in return.

“When you take 5, 10, 15 million dollars from outside influences to take over the city of Newark no one gives you money without strings attached to it. We just lived through that with Cory Booker,” he said.

On the other side Phil Alagia who is working with the Jeffries camp said that this race and the money should be a positive because it shows that people actually care what happens to the city of Newark.

“I think there’s a lot of people interested in the city of Newark and making sure that Newark is represented by the best possible person as Newark goes, so does the state of New Jersey,” he said.
