Melanie Mills: Spring Clean Your Makeup Bag

Posted: Updated:
Spring Cleaning isn’t just for your house. We asked Emmy award winning makeup artist Melanie Mills what are the rules and tips for what to keep and when to toss our cosmetics and accessories. Maria and Araksya got all of her tips, and we have them for you.

Tips for daily upkeep and expiration.

Mascara needs to be tossed every month. They say 3 months, but it really works the best fresh.

Beauty Blenders should be tossed every 6-8 weeks and cleaned thoroughly after every use.

Makeup brushes should be cleaned after every use for professions, but for personal use, you can get away with 2-3 uses between cleanings. It's good to have regular brush cleaner for quick cleanse, but it's really nice to hand wash your brushes just like you would your hair with shampoo and conditioner. Make sure to lay brushes on the side so the glue doesn't breakup until dry.

Lip glosses should be tossed after 6 months.

Eye shadow and blushes should be tossed after a year.

Find a puff you can wash as puffs should be tossed at least every month.

Gel eyeliners and cream shadows in a tube should be tossed every 3-4 months.

Concealers can last around 6 months as well before starting to dry out.

Liquid foundations can last, when they start to separate or the smell changes toss it!

Emmy Award–winning makeup artist Melanie Mills is one of Hollywood’s leading style-makers and beauty consultants, known for her glamorous flair, supreme talent, and vivacious personality.

Melanie is one of the most sought-after makeup experts in the industry. With more than fifteen years of experience, Melanie is a master of her craft, sculpting faces and bodies into true works of art in a variety of mediums, including television, film, and editorial. In 2007, Melanie was selected as the Makeup Department Head for ABC television’s global phenomenon “Dancing with the Stars,” where she defined the look of the series and won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Makeup Design in 2008. Melanie’s superior talent has earned her nine career Emmy nominations for her work on various projects in the entertainment industry, including two double nominations.

Her makeup line: Gleam

Gleam Body Radiance has long been a sexy industry secret: the go-to professional face and body makeup that transforms skin into a perfect velvet canvas, hiding imperfections and improving overall skin texture. Gleam Body Radiance was the first creation of Emmy Award-winning makeup artist Melanie Mills, who invented Gleam Body Radiance out of necessity to even out blotchy spray tans or instantly bronze skin without a spray tan, all while deeply moisturizing and making skin glow for the cameras on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.”

In February 2012, Melanie expanded the Gleam beauty collection with the launch of Gleam Lip Radiance. The newest addition to the Gleam family, Radiant Dust is a shimmery loose powder in beautiful shades that mimic and complement the four shades of Gleam Body Radiance. Silky, weightless, yet so very rich, Gleam lip, body, and face products make your skin and lips look alive and irresistible for any occasion. Lightly scented with natural vanilla essence, Gleam Body Radiance, Radiant Dust, and Lip Radiance provide an instant confidence boost for an overall radiant glow. For flawless application and coverage, look for the upcoming release of stunning, high-quality Gleam Makeup Brushes by Melanie Mills.
